The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the organization responsible for developing standards for wireless LANs. The IEEE 802.11 standards, also known as Wi-Fi, are the most commonly used standards for wireless LANs.

IEEE 802

IEEE standards for local and metro networks

IEEE 802 is a family of Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) standards for local networks (LAN), personal area network (PAN), and metro networks (GUY). The IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee (LMSC) maintains these standards. The IEEE 802 family of standards had twenty-four members, numbered 802.1 through 802.24, with an LMSC working group dedicated to each. However, not all of these working groups are currently active.

The IEEE 802 standards are restricted to computer network transporting packets of varying size, unlike cellular relay networks, for example, in which Dice it is transmitted in short, uniformly sized units called cells. isochronous signal networks, where data is transmitted as a constant stream of octetsor groups of octets, at regular time intervals, are also outside the scope of the IEEE 802 standards.

The number 802 has no meaning: it was simply the next number in the sequence that the IEEE used for standards projects.

The services and protocols specified in the IEEE 802 map to the lower two layers (data link and physical) of the seven-layer protocol Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) network reference model. IEEE 802 divides the OSI data link layer into two sublayers: logical link control (LLC) and medium access control (MAC), as follows:

The most used patterns are for ethernetBridging and virtual bridged LANs, Wireless network, wireless PAN, wireless MAN, wireless coexistenceIndependent media transfer services and wireless RAN.
