The christmas kettle (also called red kettle due to its color) is The Salvation Armythe most famous street campaign. It is most recognized during the Christmas time through its volunteers who stay outside the companies and play or sing Christmas carolsor ring bells to inspire passers-by to make cash and check donations inside traditional red kettles.

History

A “kettle” tradition began in 1891, in San Francisco, by Salvation Army officer Captain Joseph McFee. Captain McFee, deciding to offer a free Christmas dinner to the poor of San Francisco, remembered a scene he had seen in Liverpool, England. From his seaman days, McFee remembered a large pot displayed on Stage Landing called “Simpson’s Pot”. The pan received donations made by passers-by. With that idea, McFee asked San Francisco city officials for permission to place a crab pot and tripod on the Oakland ferry dock. The kettle – and McFee’s call of “Keep the pot boiling!” – attracted passengers and donations.

The idea has spread and is being used by many Salvation Army charities around the world. Crab pot innovations have included automatic kettles, booths that play Christmas music, and Credit card capabilities.

Since 1997, the Caldeira de Natal campaign has traditionally started between dallas cowboys Thanksgiving Football Game. An oversized kettle stands just outside the field of play, which has been featured on at least four occasions following touchdown celebrations:

• Terrell Owens (at the Day of Thanksgiving 2006 game (23 November) against Tampa Bay Buccaneersafter catching a touchdown pass, threw the ball into the kettle, donating the ball to the Salvation Army),
• Ezequiel Elliot (on December 18, 2016, also against Tampa Bay, after scoring a rushing touchdown he jumped into the kettle)
• Elliott again on two occasions during the 2018 Thanksgiving Day (November 22) game against washington redskins, first after scoring a touchdown threw $ 21 (his number) into the kettle; later when teammate Dak Prescott scored Elliott threw Prescott into the kettle.

anonymous donations

A tradition developed in the U.S where, in some places, gold coins are anonymously inserted into the kettles in which the bell ringers collect the donations. The tradition seems to have started in the Midwest when the first known drop of a gold coin was placed in a teapot in Crystal Lake, Illinois in 1982.

Since that fall, many others have started to play not only gold coins, but also other rare bars and coins, gold medals, jewelry and large checks. Anonymous donations included:
