The President’s Challenge

For the program in Singapore, see President’s Challenge.

The President’s Challenge (also called presidential champions) was an American program enacted by the Presidential Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition which aimed to encourage all Americans to “make activity part of their everyday lives” and be physically fit. The President’s Challenge was presented by Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966. It was designed to help motivate participants (also qualified international participants) to improve regardless of activity and fitness level. The Presidential Champions program was discontinued on June 30, 2018.

program content

The President’s Challenge program included awards for active performers in their favorite games, sports or athletics. There were several tiers of prizes available. They are:

  • Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA)
  • Fitness Health Award
  • Presidential Champions Awards
    • Bronze Presidential Champions Award
    • Presidential Champions Silver Award
    • Presidential Champions Gold Award
    • Presidential Champions Platinum Award

For credit, entrants must record their daily efforts, which, as noted above, may include sports and fitness activities. Each daily activity gives a certain number of points, the number computed for its intensity and duration. The report is entirely honor system. Each higher level award requires accumulating more points. There is no time limit. Qualifiers are eligible for certificates, medals and patches, with the platinum prize being a large medallion. The lower levels are comparatively easy, while the platinum premium requires sustained effort, typically over several years. Annually, the number of people who reach this point increases. Over 100 a year now earn. Several have been awarded several times.

Participants who achieve the Platinum Award will also be eligible to participate in the Presidential Champions Platinum Award program. The Platinum Awards page was taken offline in 2016 after the program transitioned from the FDA to the Department of Agriculture on August 31, 2016. SuperTracker and the new administration did not track Platinum recipients or publish any information about them, and the program was suspended in 2018.

hacked site

On January 11, 2012, operators of the website for participants in the Challenge and Active Lifestyle programs learned that the website had been hacked resulting in the disclosure of participants’ personal information. The President’s Challenge website said it was down for “Website maintenance – we’re breathing a little”. On January 20, 2012, the website was modified to explain the hacking.

On January 27, 2012, The President’s Challenge sent emails to its participants saying that the site was up and running as of January 24, 2012, and asked participants to reset their user passwords.

Discontinuation

The Trump administration ended the program on June 30, 2018. The stated reason was that the private sector created too many other tools with the same goal, so it was discontinued to invest in new ways to help Americans live a healthy lifestyle.
