Scientific Revolution Of The 17th Century. It was invented in the Netherlands by two spectacle makers, Hans and Zacharias Janssen, in 1590. The first compound microscope was created by Galileo Galilei in 1609. The development of the microscope helped to revolutionize the way scientists studied the natural world, allowing them to observe and measure the smallest of objects. This in turn allowed for the development of more accurate theories about the workings of the universe.

- 13th century: Increased use of lenses in Glasses probably led to the widespread use of simple microscopes (single objective magnifying glasses) with limited magnification.
- 1590: earliest date of a claimed Hans Martens/Zacharias Janssen invention of compound microscope (claim made in 1655).
- After 1609: Galileo Galilei is described as being able to narrow the focus of his telescope to see small objects up close and/or look the wrong way in reverse to magnify small objects. A telescope used in this way is the same as a compound microscope but historians debate whether Galileo was magnifying small objects or looking at nearby objects with his ground telescope (convex objective/concave eyepiece) inverted.
- 1619: First recorded description of a compound microscope, Dutch ambassador Willem Borel sees one in London owned by Dutch inventor Cornelis Drebbelan instrument about eighteen inches long, two inches in diameter, and supported by three brass dolphins.
- 1621: Cornelis Drebbel presents, in London, a compound microscope with a convex objective and a convex eyepiece (a “Keplerian” microscope).
