riding suspension 2022
On September 30, 2022, Soumillon was banned for 60 days for elbowing Rossa Ryan from her horse during the Thomas Bryon Award at the Saint Cloud. The ban was set to begin on October 14, allowing him to ride the Arc de Triomphe Award on October 2nd. On October 4th, the racing operation owned by the Aga Khan, citing the elbowing incident, immediately terminated Soumillon’s contract as his jockey in France. Soumillon, who will still be allowed to ride the Aga Khan’s horses occasionally, later told the racing station that he had bridges to rebuild and was determined to be committed to those who wanted to engage his services.
In November 2022, it was revealed that the company’s gaming unit Central Directorate of the Judiciary Police, which oversees racing and gambling in France, has requested that Soumillon’s suspension be extended to six months or that his license be withdrawn indefinitely. In their request, police said Soumillon’s behavior was “voluntary and dangerous” and “a serious risk to public order in horse racing”. Soumillon had time to reply, after which the French Ministry of the Interior will make a decision on the Board’s request.
