The Rockingham Flames maintained their top-two spot in the State Basketball League (SBL) with a hard-fought 91-88 victory over the Lakeside Lightning on Saturday night.
The Flames were led by import guard Chris Douglas who had a game-high 27 points, while forward Ben Purser added 24 points and 11 rebounds in the win.
The Flames started the game strongly, taking a 20-11 lead after the first quarter, but the Lightning fought back in the second quarter, outscoring the Flames 24-20 to go into the half-time break trailing by just two points.
The third quarter saw the Flames take control of the game, outscoring the Lightning 26-19 to take a 66-59 lead into the final quarter. The Lightning then mounted a late rally, but it was not enough to overcome the Flames, who held on for the three-point victory.
The win keeps the Flames in second place in the SBL standings, just one game behind the Joondalup Wolves. The Flames will now turn their attention to their next game, which is against the Cockburn Cougars on Sunday.

The club is a division of the Rockingham Basketball and Recreation Association (RBRA), the region’s premier basketball governing body. The Flames play their home games at the Mike Barnett Sports Complex.
In the early 1970s, the Rockingham and Districts Basketball Association was founded.
The Rockingham Flames made their debut in the Basketball State League (SBL) in 1992 as a women’s team, becoming the first club to present a women’s program before the men’s. In 1994, a Rockingham Flames men’s team entered the men’s SBL. The club had little success in its first 20 seasons in the SBL, with no women or men winning a minor prime minister or winning a spot in the grand final.
In 2012, the women of the Flames made history for the club by reaching their first grand final, where they lost 85-48 to southwest slammers.
Between 2013 and 2016, the Flames had a successful four-year run with female imports Sami Whitcomb and imported male Cooper Land. The duo won multiple SBL MVPs, while Whitcomb led the Flames to two championships.
In 2014, the women won the club’s first minor premiership with a first-place finish and a 20–2 record. They went undefeated through the first two rounds of the finals to reach their second grand final, where they defeated Lightning by the lake 80-75 to claim their first WSBL championship.
In 2015, the women finished as minor premiers for the second consecutive year, once again with a 20–2 record. They reached their third WSBL Grand Final in four years after going undefeated in the first two rounds of the finals. In the grand final, they defeated Willetton Tigers 68–63 to claim back-to-back titles.
In 2019, the women’s Flames finished the regular season ranked No. 7 with a 13–9 record before reaching the WSBL Grand Finals after going undefeated in the first two rounds of the Finals. In the grand final, the Flames defeated Warwick Senators 85-56 to win his third WSBL Championship.
At the 2022the Flames men reached their second straight grand final, where they defeated the Geraldton Buccaneers 91–79 to earn his debut championship. In the NBL1 National Finals, the team was crowned national champions with an 85-74 win over Frankston Blues in the championship game.
