The United Nations has designated February 26 as the International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members. This day is dedicated to remembering and honoring all the staff members who have been detained or gone missing while in the line of duty. This day serves to remind us of the risks that many staff members take in order to serve the United Nations and its mission.

The day also serves to raise awareness of the issue of detained and missing staff members, and to encourage member states to take action to protect and support them. The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has called on all countries to “ensure that those detained or missing are treated in accordance with international human rights standards and are released without delay.”

The day is also an opportunity to remember and honor all the staff members who have been detained, missing, or killed while on duty. This includes those who have served in peacekeeping and humanitarian missions, as well as those who have worked in the offices of the United Nations.

The UN has also launched the #MissingUNStaff campaign to raise awareness of the issue and to call for greater protection and support for those who are detained or missing. The campaign encourages people to share their stories and to show solidarity with those who are detained or missing.

The International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members serves as an important reminder of the risks that many staff members take in order to serve the United Nations and its mission. It is a day to honor and remember those who have been detained, missing, or killed while in the line of duty, and to call for greater action to protect and support them.
