The International Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters (IAPTI) is international professional association in translators and interpreters based on Argentina.

History

Based on Buenos Aires, ArgentinaIAPTI was constituted on September 30, 2009, Saint Jeromeday of. Created by a group of professional linguistic mediators as a vehicle for promoting ethical translation and interpretation practices and as a forum for discussing typical problems in the globalized world, such as crowdsourcing, outsourcingbad quotes and other abuses. Its legal registration under the name “International Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters” took a long time to be processed by the Argentine Inspectorate General of Justice. On February 23, 2017, it was announced that the Inspector General of Justice had finally approved IAPTI as a civil association.

According to its statutes, the Association is directed and managed by a Board of Directors composed of the following six members: President, Vice-President, General Secretary, Treasurer, two Members and two Alternates.

Events, webinars, publications

IAPTI held four international conferences, in London (2013), Athens (2014), bordeaux (2015), and the fourth conference was held in Buenos Aires in April 2017 at Hotel Claridgesame place where the association was created eight years earlier.

The organization also offers free webinars and other courses for its members, as well as a digital bulletin The IAPTIMes.

Partnerships

In 2013, IAPTI joined forces with AIIC, Red T and ADJUSTMENT in the Open Letter Project, launched in 2012. Later, Critical Link International, the International Council for the Development of Community Interpretation (CLI) and the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI).

They sent open letters addressing various issues, among others:

• pressured governments to ensure the long-term safety of the linguists who served their troops in Afghanistan
• ask the President of the United States to consider translators and interpreters in the wake of the war against Islamic state
• advocate for the UN to pass a resolution declaring September 30 as International Translation Day
