Enter these four ways to make coffee without a percolator, such as with a French press or pour-over pot. However, if you don’t have one and would rather not invest in new equipment, these ways to make coffee should be doable with items you already have around the house.

Before you get started brewing, here are some general best practices for brewing coffee:

  • Know the date of birth of your beans. By that we mean roasted dates. You will score the best homemade coffee using beans that have been roasted within two weeks.
  • Use the freshest coffee possible. Purchase whole beans and grind them to your preferred coarseness (using something like a Cuisinart Coffee Bar grinder for best flavor.)
  • Pay attention to the temperature. The ideal temperature for the water used to make coffee is around 200° Fahrenheit.

4 ways to make coffee without a percolator

1. Prepare a kitchen mug

This is a traditional, old-fashioned way to make coffee if you’re out of a microwave. It will work even if you happen to be out of power, as long as you have a gas range.

  • Start with six ounces of cold water per serving. Next, pour the water into a small saucepan over medium-high heat.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of coffee per serving to the pan. If desired, add sugar now.
  • Bring the coffee blend to a boil.
  • Stir occasionally and boil for 2 minutes.
  • Remove from the heat, let sit for 4 minutes, then pour the coffee slowly and carefully from the pan so the grounds stay in the pan and out of the cups.
  • Add sugar and/or cream if desired.

2. Make Turkish coffee

Similar to pot coffee but slightly more demanding, this method creates a thick, frothy, strong brew. It’s not a completely traditional method for Turkish coffee, but it’s a way to get really deep brew. Yes, the grinds should be in the cup at the end.

  • Start with 6 ounces of cold water per serving. Then pour the water into a small saucepan over low heat.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of coffee per serving to the pan. If desired, add sugar now.
  • When the water is about to boil, remove it from the heat and skim off the foam. Put the froth into the cup or cups of coffee.
  • Return the pan to the heat and wait for it to come to a boil again, then remove from the heat.
  • Pour half of the coffee into the cup(s).
  • Return the pan to the heat once more. Boil for another 15 seconds, then remove from heat.
  • Pour the entire mixture into one or more coffee cups. Leave to rest for 2 or 3 minutes so that the coffee can sink to the bottom.

3. Try a fake French press

Mimic the same results you would get with a french press using a cup, bowl and spoon.

  • Boil water in a saucepan on the stove.
  • In a deep bowl, add 1 tablespoon of coffee per serving.
  • Pour a small amount of boiling water over the grounds to saturate them, then add 6 ounces of water per serving.
  • Use a spoon to press the coffee grounds into the bottom of the bowl.
  • Pressing the spoon over the grounds, pour the remaining liquid into the coffee cup or cups.
  • Add sugar and/or cream if desired.

4. Make a coffee bag

If you prefer a less bitter coffee, stock up on coffee filters for this kitchen method.

  • Set a filter on the counter and add 2 tablespoons of coffee. (We ask more in this method to account for the filter and how much flavor can “leak out”.)
  • Bring the ends of the strainer together and tie with string. Imagine a package similar to a tea bag. Put this bag in your cup of coffee.
  • In a small saucepan, bring the water to a boil.
  • Saturate the coffee bag in just enough water to soak the grounds, then allow the grounds to soak for 30 seconds.
  • Pour 6 ounces of water into your coffee cup.
  • Leave to infuse for 4 minutes, then remove the bag.

Coffee WITH NO COFFEE MAKER | 2 Ways | No Electric Coffee Maker? No Problem!

Nope… it isn’t instant coffee! I’m using FRESHLY GROUND coffee beans to make two amazing cups ‘o joe two different ways and because it is so yummy, I don’t even own a traditional coffee maker!

Now I feel the urge to cue the “Coffee Pot (It’s Time For The Perculator)” song, even though we aren’t using one. Go ahead and google it… it’ll boost your mood!

But I digress. Read on for the recipe.

IMPORTANT NOTE: For each method, you will need to use coffee grounds that are NOT in powdered form (i.e the kind you use in a standard coffee maker). The grounds need to be coarse (think: cake crumbs, or crumbs left on a plate from a sandwich). I grind mine fresh every morning, but you can use the grinder at the grocery store if you don’t own one. FYI: You can get a decent grinder for less than . I highly recommend it, as fresh ground coffee beans make for even BETTER coffee, especially at the crack of dawn (when you’re tired, unorganized, packing school lunches, making breakfast…. you get it, right?) I’m digressing again.

NOTE: Use one heaping tablespoon of coffee beans per cup and grind coffee beans to a coarse grind.

Method 1: French press
Place the desired amount of coffee in French press (see note above). Cover with very hot water, using about 1 cup of water per cup of coffee. Let stand about 5 minutes; longer for stronger coffee, less for weaker coffee. Pour and enjoy!

Method 2: Place the desired amount of coffee in a strainer (see note above) and place over a liquid measuring cup or large coffee mug. Gently and slowly pour very hot water over the coffee. Using a second measuring cup or strainer, repeat process anywhere from 2-5 times until coffee reaches desired strength.
