“The easiest way to peel a butternut squash is with a simple vegetable peeler,” says Allrecipes Jab’s home cook. “Peel it, then trim off the ends, cut in half, scrape off the goo and seeds, and then mince it according to your recipe instructions. Easy peezy!”

Here’s how home cook GeekFeeder peels a butternut squash with a potato peeler:

1. Lay the squash on its side. Cut into two halves, separating the bottom “big ball” from the top “tube”.

2. Cut the bottom of the large ball so that you have two parallel flat surfaces.

3. Place the ball on a flat face. Cut the skin slices using a peeler, from top to bottom, following the outline of the ball as you make each cut.

4. Cut off the top of the tube. Stand on a flat end. Cut slices of skin, top to bottom.

5. After both pieces are peeled, cut each half in half (top to bottom) to expose the seeds, which you scrape off and discard.

Some home cooks suggest microwaving squash to soften the skin before cutting and peeling it.
