How To Make French Toast With Hawaiian Rolls

Ah, the simple decadence of Hawaiian Rolls. Impeccably fluffy when eaten on its own, or the tastiest bread base for your best sandwich snacks ever. There are countless ways to love and devour Hawaiian rolls, but we just stumbled upon a new twist that’s changing the breakfast game: French-style beignets with Hawaiian roll.

This idea might sound familiar if you visited IHOP in 2018 when their King’s Hawaiian Sweet Bread French Toast graced the menu (in case you missed it, here’s a copycat recipe for you to try). But that breakfast plate took a group of four rolls and cut them in half to make flatter, longer slices of French toast. Chef Candace on TikTok has taken a fresh approach to the concept by leaving the rolls whole, creating thick, fluffy, four-sided French toast puffs that are just begging to be dunked in maple syrup.

We found only one flaw in chef Candace’s recipe: the inside of the bread was still a bit dry. So, to load the rolls with the maximum amount of flavor and decadence, we decided to stuff them with both whipped cream (canned one) and a strawberry cream cheese filling. The result was even more heavenly than you can imagine. So what are you waiting for?

Here’s how to make Hawaiian roll French toast beignets

Recipe adapted by Chef Candace

  • 3 large eggs
  • ¼ cup of milk
  • 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 packet (12 rolls) of Hawaiian rolls
  • ½ cup softened cream cheese
  • ½ cup jam of your choice (I used strawberry)
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar
  • Maple syrup, for serving

  1. In a medium sized mixing bowl, whisk the eggs together until stiff. Add the milk, vanilla, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Beat until completely combined.
  2. Heat a buttered skillet over medium heat. Dip each roll into the egg mixture, making sure to coat all sides. Transfer the rolls to the heated pan, cooking about 4 at a time. Let the rolls cook on each side for 30-45 seconds or until golden brown. Remove from the heat and repeat with the remaining rolls.
  3. In a small mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and jam until smooth. Transfer to a piping back or zip-top bag fitted with a piping tip. Insert the tip into the center of the roll and squeeze gently until the filling starts to come out of the hole. Repeat with each roll.
  4. Dust the finished French toast puffs with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup, if desired. Serve immediately.
