There’s nothing more frustrating than craving a specific dish, only to buy its ingredients and find that one or two of them are out of stock. But a trip to the supermarket can now also mean that products you once found in excess are no longer on the shelves, giving a whole new meaning to the concept of ‘limited edition’.

Food shortages have affected the entire country and, unfortunately, will continue to do so in the coming months. But will there be a respite from this uncomfortable trend? And what kind of items will directly affect these supply chain issues?

We chatted with Katie Denis, vice president of communications for the Consumer Brand Association, for her expert predictions, plus an explanation of what and who is directly impacting this crisis.


The source of supply chain problems

Impact of climate change and sustainability efforts aside, the root of America’s supply and demand problem stems primarily from an inflated market and lack of workforce.

According to Denis, “Demand for consumer packaged goods continues to grow as the US supply chain is in crisis, buoyed by a labor shortage that is only getting worse.”

“With the cost of manufacturing and shipping goods rising record after record, the need to ease supply chain pressure has never been greater,” he adds, revealing that the Consumer Brand Association’s core mission is to “push for the eventual final passage of Lingua passed by the House and Senate that would form a government-wide federal program to support the development of new technologies aimed at reducing supply chain risk and provide funding to help strengthen the supply chain and the manufacturing sector”.

As of right now, there is, likely, a lack of resources and leadership to handle the major disruption to getting our nation’s food from farm to table.

In response, the Consumer Brand Association, in collaboration with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) and Iowa State University, has developed a set of recommendations to “improve the resilience and competitiveness of the supply chain, based on the data collected from 25 supply chain thought leaders, has published supply chain research and government and NGO papers.”

The mission? Push for a supply chain office in the federal government to “provide the leadership needed to develop sound public policy, monitor its implementation, and evaluate its results.”


Most affected foods

While this list changes weekly, sports and energy drinks, baked goods, and packaged cookies and crackers top the list of foods hardest hit by these delays and shortages.

“The total out-of-stock rate for food and beverages is currently at 11 percent,” reveals Denis, citing data from Information Resources, Inc; the agency tracks and reports the numbers on a weekly basis.

Consumers can also use this website as a tool to predict any out-of-stock issues they might encounter before their next trip to the supermarket. Of course, the easiest thing to do is call local businesses ahead of time and ask about availability. Some stores like Trader Joe’s even set some items aside if you pick them up by the end of the day.


The remedy

There is no quick fix to solving economic disasters overnight, but Denis and his team are committed to supporting the above policies that will create a more streamlined leadership team and monitoring process. The company’s goal is also to enable quick, easy and safe substitutions for any ingredients that may be blocked or depleted during harvest and/or production.

“We’ve seen this work successfully during the pandemic, and extending those policies would have a lasting impact on the stability of product availability,” he says.

Of course, there’s a gray area as to what these substitutions might entail and how they’re regulated (that would be a case-by-case scenario), but it’s a simple step toward not relying on one or two low-yielding ingredients that they are stalling overall manufacturing efforts.


The future of food shortages

Unfortunately, any sense of ‘normalcy’ doesn’t seem to be within reach.

“As more disruptions continue to hit the world, the supply chain will continue to be strained, which can lead to an increase in out-of-stocks,” predicts Denis. “With a workforce shortage coupled with high demand, there is no slack in the supply chain. Events like the Russian-Ukrainian invasion, COVID, weather and more create disruption within the supply chain.”

Denis added, “Instead, there is still urgent need to implement key supply chain policies, such as establishing a federal supply chain bureau to improve visibility, which will help us be prepared for the next disruption.”

So when you see that case of Red Bull or your favorite brown cracker, it might be in your best interest to stock up. You may not know if it will be there the next time you wander the halls and think, “Where is everything I love and need?”
