The American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) is a professional organization founded in 1982 to promote the understanding of human sexuality and to promote the highest standards of professional practice for sexuality educators, counselors and therapists. The organization is composed of a diverse group of individuals from a variety of disciplines, including psychology, sociology, anthropology, medicine, public health, social work, marriage and family therapy, pastoral counseling, education, law, and nursing. AASECT provides professional development and resources for its members, and works to ensure the highest quality of care for the public. AASECT also advocates for sexual health and rights, and works to reduce stigma and discrimination related to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression.

History and overview
AASECT was founded by Patricia Schiller in 1967. AASECT publishes the peer-reviewed journals American Journal of Sex Education and the Journal of Sex Education and Therapy. They have also published a directory of sex therapists since 1976 and initiated phone and online therapy options. AASECT is the leading organization that certifies sexual health professionals. AASECT offers certification of sexual health professionals in four categories: sexuality educator, sex counselor, sex therapist (CST) and supervisor (CST-S).
